On the heels of the upcoming popular Black Friday and Cyber ââMonday shopping days, comes Giving Tuesday. Here at home, the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) helps raise awareness and support many local nonprofits.
âIn what has been a difficult year for so many people, we really look forward to giving on Tuesday this year with his camaraderie, lightness and incredible support that our communities are showing for our local nonprofits,â said the Executive Director of CFNEM, Patrick Heraghty. âLast year, over $ 233,000 was raised in 24 hours. There is never a way to know what each year will bring, but we hope the community shows up on November 30 to make this another successful year for nonprofits in our area.
This year marks CFNEM’s seventh year to lead a local event here in Northeast Michigan. Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving designed to harness the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to celebrate generosity around the world. The 24-hour giving event takes place on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) every year to kick off the holiday giving season. The hope is that people set aside a few minutes for their holiday shopping to give back to their community through the charities and causes they support.
To help the 60 participating local nonprofits participate in Giving Tuesday, CFNEM will provide the technical infrastructure through its website and social media to showcase and manage donations, all at no cost to participating organizations. 100% of each donation will go to the association of the donors’ choice. Donors can visit cfnem.org on Giving Tuesday and donate to any, some, or all of these nonprofits.
Heraghty also noted that in addition to participating organizations, donors can also donate to any fund of CFNEM or its affiliated foundations as a Giving Tuesday gift.
âWhile there are many organizations participating in the campaign, CFNEM also owns 500 different charitable funds that support so many different causes and organizations,â Heraghty said. âDonations to these funds will also count on November 30 as Tuesday gifts. “
Four years ago, Grant the Giving Tuesday Golden Goose was touted as a fun way to boost friendly competition between nonprofits. The grant goes to the non-profit organization that raised the most money on Giving Tuesday and went to the Boys and Girls Club in Alpena last year. After spending nearly a year with the kids at the club, Grant returned to the Community Foundation to await news of his residence in 2021-2022.
In addition to the four-county area served by CFNEM, it is also the administrative arm of three affiliated community foundations covering an area of ââfive counties. These affiliates include the Iosco County Community Foundation, the North Central Michigan Community Foundation, and the Straits Region Community Foundation. Each affiliate also has nonprofit organizations in their community.
Giving Tuesday Northeast Michigan begins at midnight on November 30. The public will be able to donate for a full 24 hours and monitor the total donation amount online throughout the day. The total amount donated to each organization will be announced at a live online event after Giving Tuesday with participating nonprofits.
âThis is a great opportunity for nonprofits to mobilize their supporters and rally them around their organization,â said Christine Hitch, Director of Marketing Communications at CFNEM. “The more they promote their nonprofit organization for Giving Tuesday and use the tools we offer them, especially through social media, the more likely they are to receive donations.”
Hitch notes that although Giving Tuesday Northeast Michigan is primarily an online donation event, donors are encouraged to deposit their checks at the CFNEM offices at 100 N. Ripley, Suite F, in Alpena. Checks must be deposited by November 30 to be counted as a Tuesday I Give Donation.
