Is the BMW 640i Gran Coupé the best Bimmer deal?

Whenever I see a BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe on the road, I am always shocked at how beautiful it still is. As a BMW fan (but not a fanboy, there is a difference) I can freely admit that BMW has never been a brand that consistently makes beautiful cars. Beautiful, sophisticated and simple designs have always been the wheelhouse of BMW, but breathtakingly beautiful cars only come from time to time for BMW. The 6 Series Gran Coupé is one such car.

Also, whenever I see a 6er GC on the road, I always come home and look for used examples on the market. I can’t afford it, so I don’t need to bother to check it out, but I’m still curious. After checking again recently, I realized how great a bargain the BMW 640i Gran Coupé is. In fact, this might be the best Bimmer deal you can get.

In the US, you can find a nice example of a 640i Gran Coupé – good mileage, well equipped, and in good condition – for under $ 35,000. Granted, the closer you get to $ 20,000, the higher the mileage and the shady the dealership. Still, you can get a BMW 640i Gran Coupe for less money than a brand new BMW 330i and think about the difference between these two cars.

Let’s take a look at the BMW 640i Gran Coupé and what it brings to its moderately priced table. For starters, this is a long and long grand touring car with four doors and four seats whose design is beaten only by the Aston Martin Rapide, which incidentally was significantly more expensive than the Bimmer. when both were new, by the way. It’s also a luxury car, which carried a sticker price of around $ 76,000 when new. For reference, the current BMW 330i costs just over $ 40,000 to boot.

In addition, the BMW 640i Gran Coupé was fitted with an excellent engine, a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, the BMW N55 engine. It developed 315 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque and was mated to an eight-speed ZF auto. You can find examples with both rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive. You’ll spend more on the xDrive models, obviously, but not much more.

Back then, it was capable of 0-60 mph in about five and a half seconds, plus or minus a few tenths depending on the tires and conditions. It might not be impressive today, but it’s still hot in a big, heavy car that seats four adults in comfort and in luxury.

Also check this interior. The homogenized modernity of the automotive industry can make people forget that some cars had unique interiors. Today, the interior of the 8 Series resembles that of the 4 Series, which resembles that of the 2 Series. It’s almost all identical. However, the older 6 Series Gran Coupé resisted this trend. Of course, there was a familiarity between the interiors of its siblings, but there was that beautiful waterfall effect running down the dashboard and onto the center console, only on the passenger side. This asymmetry made her feel sporty and different from her fellow Bimmer. As always, the quality was there.

Of course, being a high-end, highly electronic used BMW, it won’t be the cheapest car to maintain. However, among the 6 Series Gran Coupé range, the 640 is the safest bet. The N55 engine was used in so many different cars and seemed to be quite reliable. Parts are also plentiful, and it’s a lot cheaper to maintain than something like the 650i’s N63 biturbo V8 from the 650i.

For around $ 30,000 to $ 35,000, it’s hard to find a better buy from BMW than the 640i Gran Coupe. It has a stunning look, a fantastic and luxurious cabin, an excellent engine that makes up for its lack of modern performance with character, and reliability decent enough that it doesn’t crush your wallet. If I had that kind of money to spend, I would be hard pressed to look away from the BMW 640 Gran Coupé.
