Marketing agency helps disabled charity fulfill dream of running at Silverstone
A digital marketing agency based in the North West, Aqueous Digital has helped the Speed of Sight charity provide a unique experience for blind and disabled people to race on the legendary Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire.
Speed of Sight is a unique charity that provides adrenaline-pumping car driving for blind, visually impaired and wheelchair users of all ages. Their founder, Mike Newman, born completely blind, is a nine-time world record holder and currently the fastest blind man on land and water on the planet.
Earlier this month, Speed of Sight’s dreams came true when they had the opportunity to host one of their events at the iconic Silverstone circuit, home of Formula 1 and the Grand Great Britain prices.
John Galloway, Speed of Sight co-founder with Mike Newman, said: “It’s amazing what you can accomplish in life, with the right attitude and a little help from friends and supporters alike. Aqueous Digital and others. Together you can make the impossible possible.
“Ten years ago Mike and I came up with the concept of providing driving experiences for the blind and disabled. Many have said “this is a crazy idea, it will never take off. Too dangerous, especially for people with disabilities. But we’ve all proven them wrong, and here we are at the legendary Silverstone. It is a proud moment for all of us.
Aqueous Digital, an award-winning digital agency based in Cheshire, has long supported the charity. They help them with their online advertising, while being a member of the ‘Inspire 25’ club of their supporting companies.
Aqueous Sales Director Ian Bold is currently taking on his own massive sporting challenge, running 10 km every day this year to raise money for the association. As he nears his 300th 10k run, he hopes to raise more than £ 3,000 by New Years Eve to help fund more track events hosted by Speed of Sight.
Ian and Marketing Director Kristian Bentham of Aqueous went to Silverstone to help that day. They were joined by a host of other volunteers and corporate supporters, as well as Lewis Hamilton’s brother Nick Hamilton, who is an ambassador for the charity.
Nick was the first disabled driver to compete in the British Touring Car Championships in 2015. He drove around Silverstone blindfolded to better understand what drivers are blind or visually impaired.
He said: “It was the best experience I have ever had in a race car, I had complete confidence in my instructor Martin who I have been with for a long time so it was great to be in communication with him. And obviously I know Silverstone, I raced here two weeks ago so that helps me … but it was amazing, I wanted to keep going to be fair.
All participants are able to drive the cars on their own, although in everyday life their disabilities prevent them from holding a driver’s license. The charity has specially designed dual-drive vehicles, allowing people of any age or ability to experience the thrill of being behind the wheel on a racetrack.
Ian Bold, Sales Manager at Aqueous, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to volunteer and fundraise for such an important cause. Helping the track days of Speed of Sight really hammers out the difference the charity makes in people’s lives, especially when you see the euphoria and excitement on the faces of the participants. I wholeheartedly encourage other companies to get involved by joining their Inspire 25 club.
