Organized ride for road awareness, bicycle safety

PHOENIX – Even before sunrise, the volunteers were getting ready for a morning of excitement.
Even though it was tinged with a little sadness. “We took his dream and made it a reality,” said John Dollar.
This dream belonged to Rob Dollar, John’s son. Rob knew how dangerous it is for cyclists on the road and wanted to raise awareness with an organized ride. But he never had the chance to carry out his plan. Rob was just 36 when an impaired driver hit him with his car while driving on Summit Trail Rd. In Southern Mountain Park.
“Community awareness needs to be high,” said cyclist Eric Barria.
According to his friends and family, Rob was the party life, boisterous, and “the hype man” to everyone.
“He was the greatest cheerleader for people on the road,” said Rob’s friend Lisa Dillon.
This is the fourth consecutive year for the Rob Dollar Ride at South Mountain Park. Although last year was virtual because of COVID.
The Rob Dollar Foundation works with city and state leaders to increase awareness through signage and educational campaigns.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, 33 cyclists were killed on the streets of Arizona last year and 812 were injured.
Dillon has now lost two cycling friends. Another was killed on his bike earlier this month during a ride in Prescott.
“They are two friends too many. We have the right to pursue this passion of ours without being in so much danger,” she said.
