Enzo the Rattlesnake needed speed
Meet Enzo Ferrari, a North Pacific rattlesnake who needs speed.
Last week, the rattlesnake hitchhiked from Spirit Ridge Lodge in Nk’Mip, Osoyoos to the Ferrari dealership in Vancouver.
The Wildlife Rescue Association of BC Support Center Helpline received a call about a snake spotted inside a Ferrari and a picture was sent to them.
“To our surprise, a photo determined it was not a local garter snake, but a North Pacific rattlesnake,” the wildlife rescue said.
Wildlife Rescue dispatched a rescue and transport volunteer who brought the snake safely to his friends at Dewdney Animal Hospital in Maple Ridge for an assessment.
Dr. Adrian Walton and his team discovered that Enzo had been microchipped by the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Center for research, which means they know exactly where to bring this snake home, down to the rock where He lived.
After good health, Walton convinced his children that a good Father’s Day gift would be to take a road trip to Osoyoos and bring home this endangered species.
Enzo was brought home to the Nk’Mip desert last week, although his return was not in such a sophisticated vehicle.
Last summer’s Nk’Mip fire devastated the habitat of local rattlesnakes. The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Center is studying the impact the wildfires have had on the local snake population. They paint one of the rattles on the snake’s tail to indicate which ones are being studied.
