PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Mike Clevinger threw one hit over five innings and combined with two relievers to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

Clevinger (1-0) won for the first time in three starts this season. He missed last season in rehabilitation after Tommy John’s operation. The right-hander pitched five innings for the first time this year, striking out five and walking none on 75 pitches.

MacKenzie Gore struck out four in three scoreless innings and Taylor Rogers worked the ninth for his 14th save as the Padres moved 10 games over .500 (23-13).

Zach Eflin (1-3) nearly tied Clevinger with five strikeouts in six innings. He gave up a run in the fifth on a forced out.

Robinson Cano, who picked Eflin in the fifth for his first hit with the Padres, fielded a left single in the seventh that Kyle Schwarber let slip under his glove for an error. Wil Myers, who started the inning with a walk against James Norwood, scored for a 2-0 lead. Trent Grisham added an RBI brace that scored Cano.

Eflin made his first start since May 1 after being activated from the COVID 19 injury list.

The Phillies returned home after a 5-2 road trip without NL MVP Bryce Harper in the roster. Harper could miss at least one more game as he recovers from a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow.

Clevinger, who also started this season on the injured list with a sprained right knee, was obtained from Cleveland at the trade deadline during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He left his last start of the regular season with what was later described as an elbow dispute and missed the Padres’ wild-card series victory over St. Louis.

Clevinger returned for the NL Division Series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but was pulled in the second inning after his speed dropped dramatically. The Padres were swept away by the Dodgers. He had Tommy John surgery later that fall.

He won 13 games in 2018 and again in 2019. But after missing a season, Clevinger said he was uncertain about pitching again.

Clevinger appears to be back in shape – and ready to help the Padres make a run in western Newfoundland.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Harper is expected to return Wednesday or Thursday. The 29-year-old two-time MVP is .305 batting with nine home runs, 14 doubles, 27 RBIs and an NL-best .634 slugging percentage.

GROOVES

Phillies 2B Jean Segura scored a single in the seventh and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, an NL high.

NEXT

The Phillies send RHP Zack Wheeler (1-3, 4.26 ERA) to the mound against San Diego LHP Blake Snell. Snell, the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner, makes his season debut. He had a groin injury.
