Students from the Wayne County School District return to class.
WAYNESBORO, Mississippi (WDAM) – Students in the Wayne County School District returned to class for the start of the fall semester on Friday.
According to the school administration, it was a good start, who say everything went without a hitch, except for several students who were unable to attend classes because they were not still registered.
Parents are requested to register their children either online at the school’s website or in person by bringing two proofs of residency to the office of the school where their child is attending.
For teachers, Friday was spent reading the textbook with the students and handing in Chromebooks and homework for the weeks to come.
However, for the kids there was a lot of excitement just being back on campus with their friends.
“It’s fun catching up with everyone, which they did over the summer. I saw all my friends in joy over the summer, but catching up with my friends from school last year was really great, ”said Heidi Ainsworth, who has just started her freshman year.
Bakari McCall, a senior this year, said he understands everything teachers and parents have had to deal with over the past year, but said he is determined to continue his education.
“It feels good to be back because of all this chaos going on with the coronavirus. We just need to cover up and keep going, whatever it takes to get our education, ”he said.
There is a mask warrant in place for everyone inside school facilities and for those taking school buses.
“We will educate them. We are going to have a good year. We will overcome this as soon as possible. Director Bubba Hathorn said.
The district employed a national company, ABM, to clean and disinfect all schools to ensure the safety of returning students.
ABM uses traditional cleaning methods as well as foggers which offer a higher level of disinfection.
School administrators are asking parents who have cases of COVID-19 in their homes to refrain from sending their children to school and promptly alert school officials to help keep schools safe.
