Styrian F1 GP review and Rosberg guest column
If Max Verstappen and Red Bull weren’t favorites for the 2021 Formula 1 world title before last weekend, they certainly are now.
Red Bull has often been competitive on its “home” circuit in Austria, but it is now the best package for four races in a row. And, as Alex Kalinauckas shows in our analysis, the main protagonists agree that the gap between the RB16B and the Mercedes W12 was bigger than ever in the Styrian Grand Prix.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said the team will stick to their guns to ensure development is focused on the new 2022 rules and that it will only be about optimizing the current car. In other words, they have what they have.
It would be foolish to rule out Hamilton – there will surely be better home runs for the Black Arrows and a few wins to come – but Verstappen now looks poised to be the first non-Mercedes champion since Sebastian Vettel in 2013.
Rosberg is the only driver other than Hamilton to have won an F1 title since then and in his column he explains why he co-founded the Greentech Festival and how he thinks motorsport can help tackle the problems of climate change. .
The story of the 2021 World Rally Championship also seems to be taking hold. As Tom Howard reports, a late failure once again deprived Hyundai of the win, leaving Sébastien Ogier in charge. The Toyota star now looks well on his way to an eighth crown.
The usual favorites didn’t have things their way at the Brands Hatch British Touring Car Meetings, with Tom Oliphant in particular. But Ash Sutton and Tom Ingram managed to make the title favorites as Colin Turkington struggled. Marcus Simmons was there to watch the drama unfold.
There was a lot going on in BTCC support, British GT and club racing paddocks this past weekend as well. We bring you all the latest news in our 20 page nationwide section, and also look forward to Euro NASCAR’s next visit to Brands Hatch.
