Take a look inside the Toyota Prius engine with over 300,000 miles
Some engines show signs of abandoning 100,000 miles. There are also those that last over a million miles thanks to loving and caring owners. However, there still seems to be some doubt about hybrid powertrains and their longevity. But to sort that out once and for all, the speedkar99 Youtube channel destroyed a Prius engine with about half a million kilometers, or about 310,000 miles.
But first, a background. The engine in this teardown is that of the 2004 Toyota Prius. That means it’s the 1NZ-FXE that comes under scrutiny here. It’s a 1.5 liter engine with an Atkinson cycle, so it’s not too keen on producing power. However, it does this by maximizing thermal efficiency.
Non-Atkinson Cycle versions of the NZ have also made their way to various Toyota models of the past 20 years or so. Some applications include the Toyota Echo, Toyota Yaris, Scion xA, and Scion xB. While the 1NZ-FXE is no longer in use, the NZ engine series still hangs out in the JPN taxi with an LPG supply.
And now, for the main event, the teardown. So how does a 2004 Prius engine behave that has traveled beyond the moon after 17 years? Not that bad, actually, and there are still several hundred thousand miles to go with a little more TLC.
Let’s get rid of the bad stuff first. speedcar99 has taken note of the discoloration of the engine over time. Having said that, it’s a bit obvious, but there are a few things that took the life out of the engine a few miles. There are plugs in the oil check rings so it didn’t get the lubrication it needed at some point. The carbon has accumulated over the years and the sludge build-up is evident.
But overall, this is the usual wear and tear associated with high mileage engines. The advice here is pretty straightforward. Take care of your car and it will reward you with decades of service. Granted, this particular Prius engine is far from the Volvo P1800 of high-mileage hero Irv Gordon, but almost anything can last over 200,000 miles without a hitch if taken care of diligently.
