TONIGHT: SIUE continues its season opening road trip in Wisconsin. SIUE and Marquette face off for the first time since 1993.
LAST TIME: Max Broughton A slap shot in the 89th minute forced overtime Thursday at Wisconsin, where the Cougars drew 1-1.
TUNE-UP: SIUE has won two preseason games, while outscoring their opponents 5-1. The Cougars faced Memphis away (3-1) and IUPUI (2-0) at home.
WELCOME BACK: After playing four seasons in the Mid-American Conference, SIUE returns to the Missouri Valley Conference, where the Cougars played as Affiliate Members from 2010 to 2016. SIUE won two tournament championships, one championship of regular season and amassed a 25-13-7 record in the MVC.
DIDN’T WE JUST DO THIS? : SIUE played its entire 2020 season in the spring of 2021. The Cougars played 10 games between February 5 and April 7. Along the way, five games were called off.
RETURNING LEADERS: Redshirt in second year Oskar Lenz led the team in scoring with 13 points on four goals and five assists. He was fourth at the MAC in goals and led the league in assists. Lluis Martorell led the MAC with a total of 44 saves, which placed them 18th nationally. He was third in the NCAA in saves per game (5.50) and third in goals against average of 0.800.
NICE SAVE: Goalkeepers Cougar Lluis Martorell and Tor Erik Larsen combined with an average of 5.50 saves per game during the 2020-21 season, which was the NCAA’s fifth-best. SIUE’s save percentage was .797, which placed second at MAC and No.28 nationally.
Overtime: SIUE played two games in overtime last year and is 1-1. The Cougars played seven overtime games in 2019 and finished 1-2-4 in those games. The school’s record for overtime games in a season is nine, both in 2014 and again in 2016.
ONE-GOAL MATCHES: SIUE was 3-2 in one-goal games last season. The Cougars are 8-5 in one-goal games over the past two seasons combined.
FAMILY FACES: The Cougars lost only one roster last season. SIUE added three new arrivals.
RANK & FILE: The Cougars landed in the top 25 in the spring, placing 25th in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the week of March 9. This was the first Top 25 ranking for SIUE since the final 2016 poll. SIUE appeared in the College Soccer News poll during the 2018 season.
HOME COOKING: At 6-2-1, SIUE recorded their second-most home wins in the Division I era in 2019. The Cougars won seven home games in 2010 and again in 2012 .
HISTORY: SIUE is playing its 55th season in men’s football. The program’s all-time record stands at 588-302-87. This is SIUE’s 14th season since returning to NCAA Division I competition in 2008. The program has competed in 23 NCAA tournaments and hosted two National Championships (1972, 1979).
