Tony Smith provides update on Hull KR injuries as new boy misses friendly against Castleford
New recruit Muizz Mustapha is one of three KR hull players who will miss Sunday’s preseason friendly against the Castleford Tigers with a minor injury.
The young prop – an off-season arrival from Leeds Rhinos on a first-year loan – has a knee problem that could rule him out of KR’s Super League opener against the Catalans Dragons on March 27.
Half-back Rowan Milnes and forward Owen Harrison are also expected to drop the practice match as a precaution.
“Muizz Mustapha is going to be missing something,” Smith said. “He has a little tear in his patellar tendon.
“It will maybe keep him outside for two to three weeks, which is unfortunate for him because he was so keen on running this week.
“Rowan Milnes has a little sternum problem right now. It just needs to be sorted out.
“The other is Owen Harrison. If he settles before Sunday, I’m not sure. He has a bit of a bruise on his heel that is hampering his workout right now.
“Other than that, I think most of the others are good to go.”
The knee issue is a big blow to Mustapha early in his stint at Rovers, with the game against Castleford being the club’s only hit heading into the new season.
But Smith says he still has time to prove his fitness for the first round.
“I’m not sure yet,” Smith added when asked if the injury excluded Mustapha from this game.
“I have to see how the others are aiming and see if he’s fit and healthy by then. He will have to go through the rigors of training to prove himself.
“I’m not going to shut anyone out and use the crystal ball for something on the track.
“I know he’s disappointed. He would have liked to have a hit this week and put his name further in the hat for selection for this game.
“I keep an open mind on each of them.”
