The center-back for Real Madrid and France is a man in demand and Varane has less than 18 months on his current contract with the reigning Spanish champions.
Let’s take a look at this juicy rumor as the bitter rivals are ready to fight to improve their central defensive options.
Raphaël Varane at Manchester United or Liverpool?
According to Manchester Evening News, Real Madrid are said to be ready to sell 27-year-old Varane this summer.
The Frenchman has won four UEFA Champions League trophies and three La Liga titles during his 10-year stint at the Santiago Bernabeu, but contract negotiations are not going well.
According to the report, Real Madrid are keen to capitalize on Varane this summer rather than risk losing the World Cup winner for nothing from January 2022.
Manchester United need a new center-back? They have been linked with a move for Dayot Upamecano, Kalidou Koulibaly and many more over the past few months and this is clearly an area Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to improve.
Harry Maguire will be his first-choice center-back for years to come and United are believed to be keen on an upgrade from center-defensive partner Victor Lindelof. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have both been injury prone, while Axel Tuanzebe is a very good replacement option, but they need some extra quality on defense.
Defensive mistakes have cost United points this season and that is why they are not serious title contenders. Varane was going to change that.
What about Varane at Liverpool?
A report from Spanish media AS claims Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on Varane and would like to take a step for him this summer.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez set to be in good shape for next season, Jurgen Klopp will return to his first-choice center partners.
However, it is clear that signing on loan Ozan Kabak struggled early in his Anfield career, while Preston’s deadline day signing Ben Davies suffered a few small injuries. Joel Matip also suffered from injuries and Nat Phillips has done well each time he’s substituted, but the center back is clearly an area where Klopp needs to add some extra quality.
Could Varane and Van Dijk play together? It would be tough on Gomez, but there is no doubt that it would be a pretty unstoppable center-back duo. Varane would be able to sweep behind Van Dijk and the French center-back will have plenty of options this summer as Real Madrid decide to cash.
