VTG is at the forefront of innovation in pocket wagons: connected rail assets for better rail safety practices and digital efficiency
Hamburg, 03. June 2021
Rail freight workers should carefully monitor the loading and securing of semi-trailers placed on pocket cars, as they can be vulnerable to adverse conditions such as high winds, steep slopes, and poorly king pins. aligned, all of which can compromise security if not managed carefully. Now Nexxiot and VTG are taking rail safety to the next level and expanding their cooperation: VTG is currently testing Nexxiot’s Kingpin Monitor solution, which is a complete maintenance-free sensor solution to monitor the loading of road semi-trailers that are being placed. on wagon pocket.
The sensor application is currently being tested on a total of 70 double pocket cars under some of the toughest industrial conditions and for very sensitive and demanding freight requirements. Provided the results of the series of tests confirm that the technology creates significant value for these types of assets in the supply chain, a full deployment for all double pocket cars is scheduled to begin in November 2021 and will be completed by 2022. With this, VTG demonstrates its commitment to having the safest and most secure pocket cars in the industry, a testament to the innovative spirit of the company. Dr Hanno Schell, Technical Innovation Manager at VTG, says: “The Kingpin sensor adds to our digital efficiency and security practices. We believe this will become the norm in the market. As an innovation leader, VTG believes that quality and responsibility are highly valued by our customers. We are therefore taking all the necessary measures to enable better services and greater confidence in rail freight. ‘
The Kingpin sensor piloted between VTG and Nexxiot detects whether the kingpin is engaged and whether the hitch status is open or locked. There are two screens on the sensor itself and one of them is placed on either side of the wagon. All data collected and transmitted by Nexxiot will be gathered on the VTG platform. This ensures both instant confirmation feedback for operators in the field and also transparency for controllers and decision makers in management offices. It also means that automated checks can be carried out at any time during the journey. Data can be used to confirm and trigger critical events, and business processes can be linked to these controls to ensure a strong connection and engagement of these security enhancement components. The data can also be used to investigate an event.
Stefan Kalmund, CEO of Nexxiot, says: “If more goods are to be moved from road to rail in the future, we have to make sure that this also happens in a safe manner. With the Kingpin sensor, we offer a cutting-edge digital solution to prevent accidents and support employees in their processes. We provide continuous feedback on hitch status both during loading and throughout the journey, using real-time communication and providing alarm messages in the event of a change in lockout status. . I am confident that this innovation with VTG will lay the groundwork for significant change in the industry. ‘
The rail freight industry has taken a proactive approach to sensor technology and digital transformation. As such, the new sensor solution is an additional safety measure and at the same time an important help for customers and loading personnel. It offers more security for the employees on site, especially in the dark. Crane operators and ground staff are familiar with handling trailers. However, when visibility is poor, they often have to perform the inspection with flashlights and rely on an acoustic signal the pin emits when properly seated into the support frame. The sensor offers certainty here, as an LED light on the control module signals that the pin is correctly positioned. A second LED indicates that the locking latch is engaged.
This development provides further proof that VTG is setting the benchmark in how it champions the benefits of digital assets and data-driven value for its customers. VTG Connect, a cloud service backed by Nexxiot technology, along with a range of associated sensors, define new possibilities as it continues to mature. Security is always one of the most important considerations because mistakes can be so costly on many levels. Sensors like the Nexxiot Kingpin sensor represent major breakthroughs for the industry. As part of the innovation project “Status-oriented and predictive maintenance by VTG Rail Europe”, the European Union is promoting the use of sensors to digitize rail freight transport. The project is therefore co-financed by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructures and the Environment (CINEA) of the European Union.
